Hi Everyone,

Wishing you all a happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year. Our family are lucky enough to celebrate twice! As I married into a Chinese family we celebrate not only the western New Years Eve on the 31st Dec but also Chinese New Year (according to the moon). This year, the first day of the Chinese New Year of the Ox started on 26th January. Lots of feasting, drinking (I stick to the soft stuff), laughing, family times. It's great AND it lasts for two weeks. I particularly like watching the lion dances with all the exciting drumming and acrobatics of the "lions". These are often seen at the various Chinese restaurants and shops.

I haven't been making any fractals in Apophysis lately. Most of my spare time has been taken up researching an unsolved double murder that happened in 1885 and presenting all the info on a new website I made The Roebourne Bank Murders It's an ongoing project, so not all the site is complete yet. Researching it has become a most fascinating obsession. Along the way I have learnt a lot of background information about the social history of our pioneers, Aborigines and Asian workers in the north west of our state, Western Australia. Who said history is boring?!

Hopefully, as I have the time, I will get back to Apophysis, but until then I will just keep watching all the wonderful art that is being produced by all the talented people here.

We have a Chinese Society in my town that puts on a show each year for New Year. . . My daughter Amy has asked to go see it this year. One of my friends was the back end of a lion for few years too ( I guess not a lot of people can say that  )

Hi Marsille,

Yes! It's such an enjoyable time. We put a little bit of money into "red packets". The amount is not important, though some people do put a lot of money in. It is considered "lucky money" for the recipient. These are usually given to the children in the family, though my husband and I also give packets to our respective parents as well. In years gone by when the children were younger it was a very profitable time for them especially if we were visiting lots of Chinese friends. I remember having to keep a supply of red packets in my handbag in case we met friend's children.

I love the traditions.. I lived in San Francisco for 32 years.. I really miss all the fun.. People where I am now know very little about it.. I had my son's best friend living with up for a few years.. He's was Chinese.. Mom and I usually go to the Chinese resturant for the celebrations there, but I was having medical tests all day, so we are going today..

Lion dances are such fun! After all these years I never get sick of them. Restaurants here will tie a lettuce over their front door and eventually the lion will stand up to reach and "eat it". The restaurant pays the lion dance troupe with "red packets". The lions will go right into the restaurants sweeping out all the negative elements that have accrued over the past year. Wonderful customs I think! Your daughter will enjoy watching the spectacle. It's noisy and exciting. I love the way the lions flutter their eyelashes. They are so beautiful. The guys inside the lion need a huge amount of stamina and strength. It's incredibly hot work. Performing at just one venue is exhausting, then they have to continue on to other places as well. Chinese New Year would be their busiest time, though there will be performances for any new Chinese restuarants opening up or on other special occasions during the year.

 My friend who did the lion dance is super-fit. At the time, he did rock climbing, kick-boxing and other martial arts as well.
